TheFlyJock's Blog: Who Should Be VP?

Date: Monday, May 12, 2008
By: Tom Joyner

Just a few weekend thoughts …

Every Friday after the show, when the crew and I say our goodbyes to each other, J. always yells out, “See y’all in 20 minutes.” It’s a funny and cruel reminder of how fast the weekend flies, especially when you’re as busy as most of us are.

Along with it being Mother’s Day weekend, it’s also graduation time. I was the commencement speaker at two HBCU graduations on Saturday -- one at Cheyney University in Philadelphia and one at Southern University in New Orleans. With all that flying and all that meeting and greeting, I had a lot of time to think and discuss the topic on most  people’s minds: R. Kelly’s trial, the police beatings in Philadelphia and, of course, the primaries.

Some people are still arguing about whether Barack Obama should be Hillary Clinton’s running mate or Hillary should be Barack’s running mate, but the
question my brunch buddies were having is if not Hillary as a running mate, then who?  Here’s an interesting theory. Instead of Hillary, another strong feisty female with experience might be unbeatable. One name thrown out was Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House.  But that’s all they could come up with. What do you think?  Can you think of a woman who can close the gap Obama has with Hillary supporters if she doesn’t run?  How about a man?  Who’s on your VP list?

Did you use our list to holla at super delegate?  We’re adding more names.  If you’ve sent an e-mail and let me know what you said and whether you’ve gotten a response from an uncommitted superdelegate, I wonder how they could still be uncommitted. It seems like, by now, everyone should know who they’re with.

Are you still uncommitted?  If you are, tell me why. If you are committed, when did you make up your mind?  Were you with Obama from the beginning?  Did you wait until he got “rock star” status?  Did the race speech change you?  Was it his movement away from Rev. Jeremiah Wright?  What ever it was that brought you to Barack’s side might help you to influence someone else you know who is uncommitted — perhaps even a superdelegate. It can’t hurt to try.
